Technical Specs:
Surface Preparation
  • Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Loose dirt of moisture may contaminate masking tape adhesives, which will cause edge lifting.
  • A painted surface must be fully cured prior to masking tape application.
  • On previously painted surfaces, results vary according to the quality of the original preparation, primer and paint.
  • All masking tapes tend to lift old paint which has low quality primer and poor surface preparation.
Tape Application
  • When using a tape for the first time, test it in an inconspicuous area to determine suitability.

Temperature
  • Store tape at 65 degrees F or higher until ready for use.
  • Before using tapes exposed to cold temperatures, allow the entire roll to warm up to a temperature of 55 degrees F.

Humidity
  • When applying masking tape to fiberboard, dry wall or wallpaper, remember their one common element - paper.
  • Fragile surfaces may be affected by humidity.
  • Always use tapes designed specifically for these applications, such as CP28.

Pressure
  • Apply masking tape using firm pressure along the edge next to the surface that is to be painted.
Tape Removal
  • For best results, remove the tape as soon as possible after the paint has been applied, particularly if the paint has been allowed to bead upon the edges of the tape.
  • The best method of removing tape is to firmly grasp the tape and pull slowly at an angle perpendicular to the tape surface.
  • Place a finger at the point of removal to ensure the angle and direction of the peel.
  • Keep the full force close to the point of separation.
  • Remove the tape at a moderate, smooth and consistent speed. Jerking or stripping the tape may damage the surface or strip the adhesive from the tape's backing.
  • Cold temperatures and low humidity may casue masking tapes to become brittle and shatter during removal.
  • If the paper backing shatters, rub the tape with a damp sponge to moisten the tape. Allow moisture to soak in, then attemp to remove again.
  • Premium grade cloth duct tape can be applied to the affected area and then pulled up gently.
  • Cloth duct tape will usually remove residual adhesive, preventing potential damage that could occur with the use of commercial solvents or paint thinners.
